yes, now restore /u1 from tape. If there is a lost+found directory on the tape, mv the lost+found on /u1 before the restore, and copy the renamed lost+found over the restored one.

#mv lost+found lost+found.save
restore
#mv lost+found.save lost+found

This should be done as the lost+found directory is preallocated with inode entries depending on the size of the inode table of the file system. It is used when fsck is run.

My system is up & running.......YES!!!!!! All application & data are up. Big many thanks to those who help most especially to JGT & EDFAIR. Hard to work on it blindly though & w/o SCO experience..

When you get to single user mode, run fsck on all the file systems,
Run authck -a, and if this doesn't terminate normally, run authck with each of the options -p -s and -t separately.
Rebuilding the kernel is not necessary.
#man authck
will show you all the affected files. These are all text files and can be manipulated with a text editor.
If you don't know vi, then you can use ed which is about as useful as edlin was in DOS, but at least its simple.
Are you sure that you are not running out of disk space in the root file system?

Last time I checked was at 73%----for root I mean. Right now it no longer brings me to single use.......just gets stuck on fpu something.....

%fpu is the floating point processor (80387) which is integral to 486DX chips and all pentium processors.
As I recall your system was dual processor, does this happen for the first processor, or the second?
This is also the last line of output showing hardware found, so the problem could still be something between the point at which this line is displayed, and the prompt for single user mode.
