I have installed RHEL 5 on Vmware. I have configured a simple FTP. I am able to transfer and receive files from the vmware-RHEL to my desktop on which vmware is installed and vice-versa. But when i try from other machine in the network it fails.

Is this just an ftp issue or is it a network issue?

Can you ping/traceroute/scp/telnet between your VMWare RHEL server and any other system on the network or can you only get networking working between the RHEL and the desktop?

If you are able to get networking between the RHEL VM and it is only FTP that is causing the issue are there any error messages being displayed? Are there any firewalls between you and the remote server that could be blocking certain/all ports?

This is a network issue, for you VMWare linux to be able to communicate with other machines on your network you would need the following config.

two virtual nics to you vm

1] Bridged mode

2] Host-Only mode

After Vmware assign's IP's to both the NIC's .On the VM-Redhat machine change your DNS settings ( of host-only adapter) to have the DNS settings of your base machine.
