Requirement: Upgrade RHEL 3 to RHEL 5.

Question: How to plan the upgrade?

Present state: Know that there is no direct upgrade path visible. And RH does not support direct upgrade.

H/W: HP Proliant DL 380 G4

My suggestion would be to do the following:

Ensure hardware compatibility for your system and your new distribution
Back up everything to another machine (tar, cpio, more advanced backup)
Rebuild the server with your new OS and move the needed files over as well as reading the new configuration files to see how to implement the most similar configuration for your required services.
