Here is a post that clearly violated the rule against requesting email responses. But what is the feeling about the profanity? auswipe seems to feel that is against the rules. But I don't really see an explicit prohibition. Is this an oversight in the rules? Or should profanity simply be allowed?

it is because we, as a group of professionals, are helping out others - the key here is being professional.

The frustration of a problem is usually there without the need of bad language. Adding that language should not be allowed, but that doesn't mean it will stop.

When it's directed at someone, then the post needs to be removed just as hacker questions are killed off.

So keep it professional - the folks that give their time and energy to this site deserve that as much as the newbies coming in.

The language does not bug me but,
RTM is right it is not professional.

I also echo the sentiment this is a great forum.

Given that there was one instance of so called "profanity" and the context that it was used, I'd not be concerned about it.

However if the context was open slather and much "profanity" then of course, kick the post off.

Directional abuse should be cut. i.e someone responding to a thread saying I was an f'n idiot for not knowing something I raised a thread about.

On the other hand swear words, profanity, etc... I don't see a problem with most - but then you have to start drawing lines about what was and wasn't and that is a very subjective thing. I'd say just a simple mention in the RULES (please avoid use of rude words.....)- then if anyone takes their own level of offence to a post they can use the 'report post to moderator.'

I've been in the forum here for a little while and haven't found much if anything offensive. Of course this may becasue you've already cut it out!

I could've swore (pun intended) that it was in the rules. But here in my take on the issue:

This forum is presented in a very professional way and the mods do a good job to keep the subject on hand and not go off on a tangent (and this is something that I am really bad about). I feel that the profanity deters from some of the professionalism.

The profanity doesn't bother me, heck, my nickname is a one-off profane insult from a SNL sketch with Nicolas Cage; But I still wouldn't want to see a forum with a bunch of "WTF" or "I can't get this F'ing POS machine working" posts that I see on other forums. I would like to keep the professional atmosphere for this forum.

That's my $0.02 worth.

It's with regards to your 'colourful metaphors' comment..... that's not currently specified in the 'rules'....
