Do I post to Homework forum if learning on own

Quick question,

I'm learning shell scripting on my own from resources like the 'Teach Yourself' books, web sites, etc. If I have any questions about these materials, do I still need to post them to the homework section?

The template asks specific things like school associated with or company (or said something like post would be deleted if the info was left out)...I'm not associated with anyone since I'm doing this on my own, but I have questions and this site seems like one of the few places where I can ask for help.

Appreciate an answer to this question so I don't anyone by not following some convention for posts.

Welcome on board!

I would say it depends on the sort of question :
If it looks too much like an assignment work, dont take the risk to find your thrad closed or get banned...
But dont forget to mention the source of your homework (book chapter page...) instead of classs etc...
e.g. in assignment you are often asked to work with restriction (using only given commands...)
The rest should be asked in dummies (IMHO) if related to "Howto" or shell programming
if you submit a shell script that is not working correctly...

Waiting to read your first post then!

All the best

The real concern is cheating people, those who abuse the forum to get free answers without learning the subject themselves. Since you're self-taught, the only person you'd be cheating is yourself, so that's not a concern Smilie

Still, we're trying to educate folks, so it'd be best not to just copy questions from the book but to just ask questions which relate to them.

Yeah, so far my questions have more to do with why a script isn't working properly. Most other questions I can find answers to on my own.

So post in shell programming with your code between code tags:

And add all information you have about the issue (error message etc...) dont forget to mention your OS and current shell you use

Thanks, will try that.

I think this will sort itself out automatically, because if you are teaching yourself from a book, than obviously you won't be interested in complete solutions anyway, just maybe some help if you get stuck somewhere or perhaps some extra info to better understand why something is that case...
