Yes, I have tried safe mode, single user mode, recovery mode, and diagnostics modes.

I don't think I tried "verbose mode' yet Smilie

Thanks for the suggestions!

I just unplugged the black can for 30 minutes (again) and rebooted, and the problem remains.

So, the "reset the SMC" does not work for this problem, for some reason.

I'm not an OSX expert (and everyone on this forum knows that!!!) but because of its 'nix under the bonnet I take an interest in the OS internals. I've heard for a few years of the bug that allows the OS to run away with the CPU and overheat the system. "kernel_task" bug. So hopefully this issue that you are having is not directly related to the fact it's a 12-core box. You state that you've searched all four corners of the planet for a solution so you've probably read all about this already (but just in case):

How to Fix Your Mac's "kernel_task" High CPU Usage Bug

And this (mentioned in above link):

How to fix kernel_task CPU usage on El Capitan | Viktor’s ramblings

Ultimately it means "putting your fingers under the bonnet" which could mean having to restore the system again if it goes wrong. However, you may decide that you have nothing to lose.

Thanks Dennis,

Yeah, I saw that "disable SIP" ... mv the .plist file method but did not try it for a number of reasons; but its moving on towards 1AM here so I am going off grid for a while.

I revisit when I awake up and plug it back onto the power socket on my UPS.

Unplugged for seven hours, still has the same problem after rebooting.

Code:
Fan whirling like crazy.
System very slow.
Activity Monitor: kernel_task CPU: 1800+ %

I am guessing it is a Mac SMC problem which doe not reset or clear, but will take to Apple today for evaluation.

But it's kinda nice not coding for days while the system is messed up ... Smilie

The 12-core mega beast is now in the hands of Apple iCare waiting for their phone call.

They could not find an entry for a 12-core MacPro in their system so they had to register it into the system as an 8-core machine.

Let's see what news Apple brings..... they said they would contact me in two or three days.

Got a phone call from Apple iCare today, and the technician told me that there was a bad sensor chip on my logic board and that was the cause of the problem.

He said this MacPro was still under warranty and asked my permission to order the chip from Singapore, estimating (worse case) the chip would arrive from Singapore and he could get the work done in 7 to 10 days.

Since we were speaking in Thai, I could not really get the details on the chip or the chip number; but I'll try to go by the Apple shop and ask them in a few days.

Pretty good Apple service, I think. Dropped the round trash can Mac Pro off at 11AM and got a call back with the status at 8PM the same day.
