Cannot access UNIX.com with new cable modem

Hi.

I have a very strange problem, so strange I don't even know which sub-forum to post it to.

Last week, my cable modem broke, so I took it back and got a new one.

The new one doesn't work with my old router so, for now, I have to connect the modem directly to my Mac with an ethernet cable.

Everything works fine, except that I cannot access unix.com in Safari or in Firefox. every other website is fine!

If, however I use Firefox on Linux in a VM I can get to the site.

I've cleared the cache, cookies and everything else I can think of.

I simply replaced the old modem with the new one, and changed nothing - and every other website works fine.

Could anyone possibly have a clue? I'm confused, and it's driving me up the wall.

Thanks.

(I would upload graphics, but Grab only saves TIFF's and they're not supported as attachment types.

Safari:
Code:
Safari can’t open the page.
Safari can’t open the page “https://www.unix.com/” because the server where this page is located isn’t responding.

Firefox:
Code:
The connection has timed out

The server at www.unix.com is taking too long to respond.

    * The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
          moments.

    * If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
          connection.

    * If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Can you reach unix.com from proxify.com?

Never heard of that!

But yes, I can (although I certainly wouldn't log in through it!)

The problem is most certainly on my computer... but where.

Are you able to gather any more information from the Safari activity monitor.

Code:
WINDOW > ACTIVITY

Hi jaysunn.

Thanks for your help.

The only output is:
Quote:
Failed to open page
  • file:///Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/
  • file:///Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/
  • file:///Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/compass.icns
  • file:///Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/ErrorPageHelpButton.tif
  • file:///Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/page-load-errors.css
If I go to any other website, say the BBC website, I get loads of "useful" output:

Quote:
BBC - Homepage
  • http://www.bbc.co.uk/

  • etc...

@scottn,

Have you resolved your issue yet? Is it related to DNS? DNS is the only protocol / service that can be related to your issue in my humble opinion. Please let use know what you come up with.

Hi jaysunn.

Still not.

Given that I have no idea what I'm doing, I did this:
  • rebooted
  • made a cup of tea
  • flushed the routing table
  • flushed the disk cache
  • manually stopped and started en0
  • made another cup of tea
  • rebooted a few more times
  • looked at the syslog

What exactly should I do, or be looking for, with DNS (remembering that it's only UNIX.com that I can't access)?

Thanks.

PS: I had a mad theory that I accessed UNIX.com so often with my old modem, that the route has burned itself into the ethernet card on my Mac Smilie This probably goes to show that I know nothing about hardware, or networks!
