OS X (Apple)

I am looking at buying a new laptop in the next week or two. I want to know, would you reccommend the Ibook G4 800mhz or the powerbook G4 with 1 gig.

basically, I will not be video editing or anyhting llike that. I just want it for dekstop features, i.e. email, web browsing what not, I do a lot of remote work, like SSH, FTP,

I normally have been running a PIII 600 Dell with Redhat 7.3 runnung enlightenement for a lot of my purposes, I jsut want something new, nice interface, non-windows, that I still can use for my *nix purposes.

Well this probably won't help because I'm not really answering your question, BUT....

I just replaced my aging PIII 500Mhz with a new 17" iMac 1.25Ghz. I've never owned an Apple before. So far I like it. I've been doing some video-editing, graphics work, as well as filling up the disk w/ a ton of music and photos from my digital camera. Everything just works. Unix command-line is there when you need it. Two thumbs up so far from me...

Save your money and get the iBook. Now that it's a G4 it's an even better value than it already was.

Unless you ever think you might need those other features, such as DVD burning (but you could always get a FireWire burner) you're not going to need the PowerBook for what you're doing. That said, An 800 Mhz G4 is quite capable of doing video and audio as well.

Now that I really think about it, the iBook is quite a damn nice machine for the price you're paying.

Go iBook and spend the difference on accessories that you don't need, but want none-the-less

ah.. thanks for th input, im a total apple n0ob, what kind of shell comes installed with OS 10.3 or whatever, can I install bash?

definitely leaning toward the G4 ibook then, a store near my hosue carries it new for 1299 not bad I think..

Well, I'm out here....

I moved full time to Macs about 2 years ago, but had never had any experience with *nix machines. I've only begun to get into that side of it, which is one of the reasons I joined this forum. There is a Mac Yahoo group (actually there are lots of Mac Yahoo groups, but only a couple of good ones) that I read quite a bit. The one in particular that I dig is:

The group owner nows everything, as far as I can tell.

Post all your Mac questions there and you'll be up to speed in no time. Sorry I couldn't help with the bash thing.

Default shell is tcsh (yuck). bash, csh and zsh are all available pre-installed.
