When I first started using UNIX Systems, I used ed (there were no word processors or "visual" editors at that time. I still use ed when I need to edit a file in place in a script. When I'm interactively editing files, I use vi. (Since I knew ed commands, I already knew a large set of vi commands.)

When I first started using UNIX Systems and wanted to format a paper, I used nroff and troff with the tbl, eqn, and pic preprocessors. I used to be pretty good at writing nroff and troff macro sets, but I'm out of practice now since I mostly use pages/numbers/keynote and the OpenOffice/LibreOffice suites.

Though I understand the utility of ed, I still feel obliged to post this. The 'novice' section in particular.

Ed, The Standard, Text Editor

Code:
Let's look at a typical novice's session with the mighty ed:

golem> ed

Note the consistent user interface and error reportage. Ed is
generous enough to flag errors, yet prudent enough not to overwhelm
the novice with verbosity.

"Ed is the standard text editor."

Useful as it is, I'm glad it's not the only thing we have anymore Smilie

I mostly use vi on (SPARC) Solaris as it is already installed.
on Linux, I use gedit when possible. nano is also very nice (cron).

Hardcore UNIX noob here. I'm not shocked to see vi(m) so high on the list. I personally use pico for everything I can, which is pretty much simplitic text editing and scripting.

How can you be a hardcore noob? That's an oxymoron if ever there was one.

Good point, but one can define hardcore as those whose condition seems to be without hope of remedy or change. Perhaps a forever noob?
