Using TextWrangler [Mac OSX] at the moment. I like the fact that it has syntax highlighting and has a run in terminal button.

Before that I just used textedit or notepad.

vi (or vim) isn't necessarily my preference but I am almost assured that it will exist on whatever UN*X distro. Unless it was removed (why would they do that? I don't know but I have seen it removed).

AIX, HPUX, SGI, DGUX, Linux, Solaris, etc.
They all have vi and it works the same on all. You may nedit or pico or ..., but vi will always be there.

I have seen linux distributions that don't come with vi.

They do come with busybox, however, which includes vi. Smilie

Almost is not absolute.

Yes I have seen systems without it as well, but they typically deselect or remove after the fact. And then again, just change the perms on the vi executable and it is disabled.

As far as I am concerned, I was using nano for many years and got used to it.

But, discovering HP-UX and Solaris I am now using vi a little bit. Not easy at the beginning but will not give it up as everybody is saying so much good things about it. It seems to worth it Smilie.

It is easy to learn vi, the same way it is easy to quit smoking. I've done so three times this year already. (learn vi, that is.)
