	   the pcm runtime instance

	   condition bits

       var
	   the variable to evaluate

       func
	   the evaluation function

       private
	   the private data pointer passed to function

       dep
	   the dependent variables

       ...
	   variable arguments

RETURN
       Zero if successful, or a negative error code on failure.
