the turn on color in vim editor

how to turn on the color in vim editor."syntax on" is not working for me.
when i do syntax on it only make some of the text basically header files nd functions name in bold.i am working on "secure crt" ..my vim is in /usr/share

i also have .vimrc file in my home folder "~"

Please help me out.

ctrl+] command is also not working in my shell.

1. yum install -y vim-enhanced.i686
2. I had to alias vi="vim" in my ~/.bashrc and
3. stick "syntax on" in my ~/.vimrc
4. Re-bash or logout|in and vi smth!
5. Done.

Thanks for replying , but i entered the first line then its says command not found.

kashish@bng-lnx-shell1:~>yum install -y vim-enhanced.i689
yum: Command not found

What's your $TERM set to ?

my shell is tcsh and not bash..so what shud i do in that case for the 2nd instruction.

$ TERM=xterm vim

Once vim is open, try 'syntax on' if it's not already in your .vimrc.

TERM=xterm: Command not found.

this is the message i got. I am working using SecureCRT and i dont have $ sign after ~ as u can see above. what should i do???

in vim editor, if i want to save that file, i have to save and exit (ZZ). i want to be able to save the file without exiting. that way, i can compile the code and if i need to change some coding, i can just switch over without retyping "vim myprogram.c". is there a way to save without exit?...
