How to print the word

1) I had one query regarding how to define a particular value which has a space.

For example, I would say

for i in s su sur
do
print $i
sleep 1
done

This will results in

s
su
sur

Now I want to display the same thing , but in different output format as mentioned below (i.e first line will have 3 spaces followed by u, second 2 spaces followed by ud and ....),

s
su
sur

Now how should my ‘for' loop be changed to get the above output

2) One more query, is it possible to get each character from a word and print it line by line

If the word is “suresh”, I should get the output as

s
u
r
e
s
h
