NAME
mesg - permit or deny messages to terminal
SYNOPSIS
DESCRIPTION
The command form forbids messages via by revoking write permission to users without appropriate privilege on the user's terminal (see write(1)). The command form reinstates permission so that only legitimate commands (such as write(1)) can be used by other users to send messages. allows applications such as or to send messages to the user's terminal (that is, without restrictions). without any other argu- ment reports the current state without changing it.
RETURN VALUE
returns the following values: 0 Messages are receivable. 1 Messages are not receivable. 2 An error occurred.
EXTERNAL INFLUENCES
Environment Variables determines the language in which messages are displayed. If is not specified in the environment or is set to the empty string, the value of is used as a default for each unspecified or empty vari- able. If is not specified or is set to the empty string, a default of "C" (see lang(5)) is used instead of If any internationalization variable contains an invalid setting, behaves as if all internationalization variables are set to "C". See environ(5).
