YPINIT(8) NIS Reference Manual YPINIT(8)NAME
ypinit - NIS database install and build program
/usr/lib/yp/ypinit [-m] [-s master_name]
ypinit builds the domain subdirectory of /var/yp for the current default domain. After building the domain subdirectory, ypinit builds a
complete set of administrative maps for your system and places them in this directory. The first map created by ypinit -m is the ypservers
map. You should run it as root on the hosts, which should be the master ypserver. You should have only one master server per NIS domain.
All databases are built from scratch, either from information available to the program at runtime, or from the ASCII data base files in
/etc. These files are listed below under FILES.
An NIS database on a slave server is set up by copying an existing database from a running server. The master_name argument should be the
hostname of an NIS server (either the master server for all the maps, or a server on which the data base is up-to-date and stable).
If the local host is the NIS master.
Set up a slave server with the database from master_name
/etc/passwd, /etc/group, /etc/hosts, /etc/networks, /etc/services, /etc/protocols, /etc/netgroup, /etc/rpc

ypinit -- initialize NIS subsystem
ypinit -c [domainname] [-l server1,...,serverN]
ypinit -m [domainname] [-l server1,...,serverN]
ypinit -s master_server [domainname] [-l server1,...,serverN]
ypinit initializes the files and directories that are required for a NIS client or server.
If domainname isn't specified, the default domain (as returned by domainname(1)) is used.
The following options are available:
-c Create a NIS client. Initializes /var/yp/binding/<domain>.ypservers to contain a list of ypservers for ypbind(8) to connect to.
Set the list of client servers from the command line rather than prompting for them interactively. The format is a comma separated
list of server names with no spaces.
-m Create a master NIS server. Generates map data from local files (/etc/master.passwd, /etc/group, etc.).
Create a slave server. Downloads the maps from master_server, which should be the active master NIS server.
To rebuild or refresh the maps for the NIS domain <domain>, change to the /var/yp/<domain> directory and run make.
/var/yp master NIS directory; contains the template makefiles.
/var/yp/<domain> directory to store NIS maps for <domain>.
list of NIS servers to bind to.

To that NIS domain I tried to add a HPUX 11.00 and an AIX 4.3.3 system (till now - there should be more clients in final version). And both systems now have to same problem:

 hi all,
I have a NIS trouble on a server.

Is it possible to set up a NIS slave to refer to a different set of home directories in /etc/passwd.
Im basically thinking of setting up a failover system where the NIS master has an attached storage array (A1000) containing the home directories. However if this fails I want the NIS slave to... (2 Replies)
New here. I want to install a server on my pc for personal use. If I chose to run it under Linux, would the pc have to be running the Linux OS for the server to be accesable? Or, in other words, will the server run when I choose to run Windows?
Would it be better to run it under Windows?
