Kinda OT: USENET Linux Groups

First, Please feel free to move or delete this thread if you do not feel it's appropriate.

I used to be a regular user of Linux USENET groups such as alt.linux, alt.os.linux, and others. I haven't used the said groups for a couple of months now, but imagine my HORROR when I thought I'd drop by this evening and took the time to download the headers.

The ENTIRE groups are just chocked full of cross-posting trolls and "Windows is better than Linux", "Linux sux", etc, useless nonsense posts.

What is happening here? Do I have to abandon USENET for good? Has anybody else witnessed the shocking decline in the quality of authentic posts?

I used to find the alt.linux group highly useful and a very worthy knowledge base, but now it is so full of idiotic Wintrolls that I feel it is time to pack in USENET for good.

Sorry for the nonsense and rambling nature of this post, I was just so amazed by what I witnessed!

Peace,
ZB

This thread is likely to be closed soon.

Maybe that's part of the problem? We keep the noise level very low here. Ditto most other actively moderated boards. You're spoiled. Smilie

I just scanned alt.linux.* and comp.os.linux.*. I would centainly not paint them with the same brush. The noise level was much higher in the alt groups. I don't find that very surprising.

Could it be that you previously read comp.os.linux, then took a break, then went to alt.linux think it was the same hierarchy? That might cause a bit of a shock.

a lot of places are like that. im into cars and the car i drive, (mkiii supra Smilie ) and one of the original sources of information (sogi) is flooded with garbage. you just have to find new places to find good info. now there are lots of forums like supramania and supraforums, and those places are awesome sources of information.

anyway thats just how things go. sometimes your favorite newgroup might just die, or itll go through a rough period of a high signal/noise ratio, and itll rebound and be as good as you remember, if not better.
