Network FTP not working under Linux but working under any other OS ??? Very strange

Dear all,

I am totally despaired and puzzled.

Using Filezilla under Windows under the same network as our Linux servers is working. Using FTP command-line client under any of our Linux debian servers is not working ! I tried with different FTP servers -> same problem !

All commands are working (login, cd, and so on) but as soon as a copy starts, the file is created on server with 0 size and sometimes some 2'880 bytes are copied but almost all time it's stuck !

And the worst is that it's difficult to give you technical details, I'm just doing
Quote:
ftp ftp.domain.com
user / pass
cd directory
put localfile destfile (here it is blocking for hours / or timeout)
Any help would be greatly appreciated !

Denis

Try ftp -p ftp.domain.com so it does transfers in passive mode, which tolerates firewalls more easily.

Thanks a lot for your suggestion but in this case passive mode doesn't work at all (not in Filezilla either)... I can only work with active mode...

Something very strange : last week it was working perfectly and suddently it does not work anymore ?

Something strange indeed is going on if not even passive mode is working. What FTP server is this?

I tried on two servers, same problem...
Both are vsftpd as far as I know...

Can you show us a copy of /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf?

Assuming you don't find a firewall blocking the ftp data channel, it is likely to be a network negotiation issue.

Try setting this parameter as low as 1024 bytes rather than allowing negotiation. If it works, then try increasing the figure in multiples of 1024.
trans_chunk_size

Consider asking your network administrator to check that every network connection involved is not set to auto-negotiate and that all are set to Full Duplex. That includes switches and hubs connecting to each other. Commonly they will drop to Half-Duplex if not set correctly or have been re-patched with the power on.
