It is not limited & you can define them in /etc/resolv.conf & prioritize them from the first to last line in this file.

Not sure what the limit is.... but for all practical purposes.... people normally configure a less than a handful in the /etc/resolve.conf file.

Most places from what I've seen have about 2 or 3 name servers configured in /etc/resolv.conf. It really depends on your site. You could get by with just one if it's pretty reliable, but people almost always have at least 2 and no more than 3 (in most cases).
