Ouch, it does not show you the free banks.

This is typically where you need to find out in advance how many slots/banks you sepcific server has. Than count the amount you have in use :

DIMM Slot Size (MB)
--------- ---------
0a 512
1a 512
0b 512
1b 512
--------- ---------
System Total (MB): 2048

Means four slots in use and 2 banks in use. I believe most of the servers have 4 banks and 8 slots. (Memory most of all has to be placed in pairs)

There are 2 ways I know of:

1. Reboot the machine and when you get the message about hitting any key in "10 seconds", hit a key. Then at the main menu type "information" and hit return. Next type "memory" and hit return.

2. Go into cstm (just type cstm at the command line). At the cstm prompt, type "map" and at the next cstm prompt type "select device #" where number is the number in the first column that matches "Memory" from the "map" output. Next type "infolog". This will show you the DIMMs that are installed. This was the output that davidg was showing you. The only way I know to tell how many are free is to refer to your system docs to determine how many slots there are in the system and subtract your result.

I am sure there are probably 100 more ways to find it in cstm. If you are not familiar with cstm it can be frustrating but is one of the best tools available with HPUX for troubleshooting if you learn how to use it.
