EPTS Meeting 3 Days 2 & 3 - further commentary

Day 2 of the EPTS agenda covered standards, use cases, and the reference architecture discussions, with the 3rd and last half-day dedicated to a guest speaker and conclusions.
  1. Standards
The main sessions here were on the OMG RFP (TBA) for the Event Metadata and Profile [*1], the IBM + Oracle proposal for a standard SQL extension [*2] for stream processing, and an update on the OASIS WS-Notification set of standards [*3].
  2. Use Cases
There were a couple of thought-provoking Event Processing applications discussed, and a few applications that simply processed events in order. Hmmm. We’ll leave that topic for a future blog discussion.
  3. Reference Architecture
A couple of vendors presented their views of a reference architecture. Except one vendor who presented some other vendor’s diagrams to complain that they didn’t seem to like the idea of this exercise. Ho hum.
  4. Invited Case Study
The last and excellent speaker was Ian Koenig of Thomson Financial, explaining how that Foreign Exchange trading was using news via NewsML and a custom engine to enrich the normal quantitative event feeds. The analysis of text events is something we’ve loosely (and probably wrongly) termed Semantic Event Processing [*4] - another future blog topic! Ian’s talk justified the whole EPTS event in my opinion.
  5. Conclusions and Actions
Opher closed the 3rd EPTS meeting with some actions. Kirk Wilson of CA and Paul Vincent of TIBCO will represent EPTS interests in the OMG EMP standard. And Arno Jacobsen from the University of Toronto and Alan Lundberg of TIBCO will liaise on industry-academia cooperation in CEP for EPTS. Arno also announced the DEBS 2008 meeting.
EPTS presentations will be placed on the complexevents.com web site.
Notes:
[*1] The Request for Proposal is still under development at the time of writing by a mixed group of vendors under the OMG SOA Special Interest Group. Events, like business rules, cross multiple domains in business and IT systems, and likewise multiple groups in OMG.
There sure are a lot of existing standards that have some overlap with EDA.
[*2] This will be especially good news for those who like their SQL statements to run to multiple pages…
[*3] There is a series of interdependent IBM-submitted standards called WS-BaseNotification, WS-BrokeredNotifications, and WS-Topics. Compare and contrast with the Microsoft-proposed W3C submission called WS-Eventing.
[*4] TIBCO is partnering with semantics-specialists Sandpiper Software (of OMG ODM - ie bridging the UML and Semantics world - fame) for its Semantic Event Processing work.
