Hitting '5' at startup gets the machine to boot from the original 4.3.3 but then the LED display is 0518 and will not get past it. I am sure it is trying to boot from the CD because the it is booting from the scsi device with an ID of 1 and that is the CD.

Booting from HD results in a problem with the netsvc.conf or resolv.conf file I know my netsvc.conf file is:
hosts = local, nis, bind4

but the problem might be in the resolv.conf file I messed up when I was setting the base TCP/IP configuration and it created at resolv.conf file and then I forgot to correct the problem before I rebooted.

I need a way to get around the 0518 error - from the links sent from porter it seems to be that my installed OS is at a higher level then the OS media I have on hand.

I was able to download the diagnostic CD for 5.1 and it indicated there was a problem with hdisk1 but I am not sure if there really is a problem there. I would like to find an image of the diagnostic CD for 4.3.3. I am going to run through the diag CD again to see if there is a real problem with hdisk1, if rootvg is spread across both hard drives that might be my problem, but I really do not think that is the problem.

Do you have another rs6000? If so you could unplug the CD-ROM, put it in the other machine and confirm the firmware is up to date.

Or do you have another CD-ROM you could use? Does your motherboard have the internal 50pin connector, I can't see from the overview PDF?

AIX 4.3.3 plus APAR IY06844 (AIX 4330-02 Recommended Maintenance Level for AIX 4.3.3) is required for the Model 170. The GA date is February 18, 2000.
If you are purchasing new RS/6000 systems, the AIX update should be phased in to new systems starting February 14, 2000. It will be available for download at:
http://techsupport.services.ibm.com/rs6k/fixes.html
In North America, you can order CDs by calling (800) 879-2755 or by ordering on the Web at http://service2.boulder.ibm.com/swdelivery/. In other geographies, ask your IBM Business Partner or IBM Representative to place a single refresh System Program Order for 5692-AIX.
For select customer requirements, there is a limited availability of AIX Version
4.3.2 support on the Model 170: PRPQ P91183, AIX 4.3.2 Workstation Support.

Resolution

After using the AIX51 diag. CD I was able to determine that the CD-ROM did have the updated firmware and that hdisk1 was the problem. I ended up reformatting hdisk0 and tossing hdisk1. I then reinstalled AIX433 up to ML11 and used a backup from another machine to restore to working condition.
