Hi all,

i use both mkcd and mkdvd for making bootable images of aix 5.3 servers i have.
They have dvd reader but no writer. I have the following questions/errors:

1. When the process of mkcd/mkdvd is running and i have
[CODE]61510 of 61510 files (100%) 0512-038 mksysb: Backup Completed Successfully.[/CODE
then i have the following errors:

Code:

creation of the CD or DVD image and are not available on the source system:

The files can be installed from the listed filesets.
0512-321 mkcd: Error populating the CD or DVD file system
using the /usr/lpp/bosinst/cdfs.optional.list proto file.

Finally i have the "cd_images" but are they bootable?
What these errors mean and how can i fix these?

2. When i transfer the "cd_images" via ftp to a windows pc with cd/dvd recorder and add the .iso to the end of the images, i can't open and see the contents of mksysb_image. Is there a problem?

Thank you

Hello,

I think in your case, some filesets are missing. try running the command lppchk to see if there is any fileset needed. I do not know whther they are optional driver filesets. anyway, please check below link
https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/c...0-000014170042

I usually follow the below procedure, If I would like to create a bootable image (mksysb) of AIX OS. (i never received any errors)

1) generate mksysb using smitty mksysb or using command with appropriate options
2) It will create a mksysb (rootvvg) on to a file.
3) convert that mksysb image to bootable ISO image
4) then use mkcd command to make it CD/DVD bootable
5) you can copy this image to any virtual oprtical disk or any

just an example;
Code:
mkcd -L -S -I /tmp/mksysb_backups/final_cd_iso_imagedir -m /tmp/mksysb_backups/mksysbfile

Initializing mkcd log: /var/adm/ras/mkcd.log...
Verifying command parameters...
Creating temporary file system: /mkcd/cd_fs...
Populating the CD or DVD file system...
Building chrp boot image...
Copying backup to the CD or DVD file system...
..................
Creating Rock Ridge format image: /tmp/mksysb_backups/final_cd_iso_imagedir/cd_image_712121000
Running mkisofs ..
..................
mkrr_fs was successful.

Making the CD or DVD image bootable...
Removing temporary file system: /mkcd/cd_fs...

I hope this helps.
