What is the network configuration?

How many hops are between the two devices?

Are you sure it's actual packet loss or is it packets being retransmitted?

Can you indicate the path from database server to application server and what virtual (hyper visors) are involved at each step?

What level of AIX are you running, and what level of firmware code?

ping and 70% packet loss.
Most likely this is caused by HW or layer 2. The first thing to check is cabling. Then mismatching config (speed,duplex,LACP) between LAN switch port and NIC.

Hello,

I am a DBA and need to coordinate with unix and network team for this.

Please advise me the procedure/steps or would appreciate if I get the commands so that I can get this checked by the corresponding team to investigate further since it's getting difficult to give the ownership of this issue to a specific team.

and Even if a database server is pinged to itself with mtu size of 1400 then also the packet loss comes.

ping to an own interface shouldn't go to hardware...
Code:
netstat -r

should list their special routing.
Give the output of your ping commands to the Unix team first!

packet loss problem

I have 4 network ports on our T5240 sun server. all but 1 gives packet losses (nxge1) nxge0 gives on average 50% packet loss, very bad. nxge2 gives on average 1-2% packet loss. nxge3 gives on average 20% packet loss. Is there a tool or something to help me find the problem? (11 Replies)

Response time under packet loss

I am experiencing a problem where under a dial condition I am experiencing packet loss, which is failrly normal, but the response to the packet loss is taking bewteen 6 and 10 seconds.
