Error AIX 5.3 Boot Hangs On Power4 Hardware

Hi all,

We have a old Power4 server with AIX version 5.3 installed. Upon boot up, it hangs right after the AIX welcome screen. On the diagnostic load progress LED indicator, I saw that it stopped at '0c32' then after awhile the LED would be blank. The screen on the monitor will hang at the black terminal screen with a not blinking cursor.

What should I do next? I hope the filesystem is not corrupted fingers crossed.

Thanks.

can you ping or telnet to the server?
have you tired booting to SMS ?

Ping and telnet doesn't work.. when I ping the server, it says the host is not reachable..

I did boot into SMS and there's a menu option to view error logs.. nothing there too..

How is the terminal connected? The code you are getting is a standard O/S output which is saying the terminal has been found (c32 A direct-attached display (HFT) was selected.) Is there a graphics adapter fitted? You could try disconnecting the display and connecting a serial display to either S1 or S2 to see if you get the login screen.

I cannot give any further advice as a 0C32 is the normal end to the boot sequence so you problems should be with the display.

I hope this helps.

Hi johnf,

On this machine there's only a serial and a DVI display port.. Originally the display was connected to the serial display port.. Just now I changed to connect to the DVI display using a DVI converter and rebooted the machine.. Result is still the same..

OK questions in order

1 Which serial port was the terminal connected to?

2 Has this worked previously?

3 If yes to 2 what has changed?

4 Are you sure the serial terminal has the correct port settings (8, none, 1)?

5 Have you tried a laptop connected to the serial port and running HyperTerminal?

I am not familiar with a DVI connector so cannot comment on this connection.

You say there is a serial connection. Are you saying there is only 1 serial port? If yes what is the machine you are using?

Hi johnf,

1. We have a VGA CRT monitor connected to the serial port of a KVM switch. And another serial cable from the switch to the server's display's adapter serial port.
2. It has worked previously.
3. At the moment we do not know what has changed as today my colleague looked at the display and saw that it was not responding. Other colleagues confirm that they were not able to connect to the machine few days ago but we were not informed until today.
4. How do I check the port setting?
5. We have not tried that and do not know how. How do we do that?

The machine we are using is a IBM eServer
