AIX

we are running aix on are server. we would like to start doing online backups, but the software company that we use is not beeing much help on what files we are backing up. is there a command that will tell me what files that we are backing up. they offer a service that would back it up for use, but i would have to pay monthy support fee. wish is twice as much for the online backup service.

What do you call online backup service?
What kind of backup are you talking about (system -using mksysb etc...) what software is used? (Netbackup?, TSM?, atempo?)

we run a solar eclipse software that runs on the box. they set it up. so i have know idea how it runs or what is file and folders that is backed up. we are looking at vault logix. they ask me what the file names we are backing up. i call the software company we use and they were dont much help. they would like to sell use there sevice.

It would be a lengthy article to explain to you how you could find out what exactly is part of the software you are using and which files need to be backed up and how often. Suffice it to say it is possible, even without the support of your software vendor, given the right UNIX skills (which, whithout wanting to insult you, you clearly lack).

The best advice i can give you is: hire a competent UNIX consultant and have him examine the system and come up with a plan. This should take typically 1 (maximum 2) days of work. Maybe you will have to purchase some hardware too (like a tape drive or something such), but anything else can be done with OS facilities (and have been done so numerous time throughout industry).
