Migrating to new SAN switch

Good morning,

I have 3 pSeries servers each with one internal boot VIOS and one boot-from-san VIOS... with numerous LPAR's running on top of them.

My question is: We are currently connecting to our IBM DS subsystem via a Cisco MDS 2GBPS SAN switch, we have recently purchased a Cisco MDS 4GBPS SAN switch and would like to migrate to it.

I have completed the migration of my WINTEL servers by simply shutting down the server, swinging over the cables, creating the new zone and powering the server back on.

I believe the AIX process is different however I am having trouble finding the correct proceedure. Can someone please help or point me in the correct direction.

Thanks.

SAN Switch Migration

Migrating your pSeries systems will be the same as the intel boxes. You'll just need to add the systems to the fabric and zone them as you did previously. This will require taking the systems down, unless you have multiple HBA's and multipathing enabled.

Good Luck.

Perfect, thanks Shawn!

I was hoping it would be that easy however when I did a lsdev -dev hdiskx -attr I could see a scsi_id field which matched the port id on the switch.

After I perform the cable swap, do I need to perform any commands on the VIOS to force it to initialize with the SAN fabric?

As long as the HBA's are plugged into the switches when it comes up, there should be no problem. I've had issues where I had to remove the FC interface 'rmdev -Rdl fcsx' and run 'cfgmgr' again when moving cables with the system up and running. But you shouldn't have this with a reboot.
