Well, you could try the finger command, if the remote server allows it (this is becoming less and less common, so don't be surprised if it doesn't work).
If that doesn't work, you can also try the VRFY and EXPN commands...
(note: the expn (expand) command will tell you not only if the account exists, but also will show the names associated with a list, or if the user is using an alias, it may show thier true user ID - who the mail is really going to...)
