With grep's greedy regex matching its not easy to lay hands on the activity if its "name is after "/opt/rather/". There may be better solutions than these ones that rely on the input lines' structure. Try

ps -eo pid,etime,command | grep -o "/opt/rather/[^ /]*\|-Xmx[^ ]*" | uniq | grep -A1 "\-Xmx"
-Xmx2048M
/opt/rather/bar

A small awk script might be more apt to fulfill your needs to the full extent...

hiding output from find command

when I do the find command from / , there are a lot of directories that I do not have access to and so I get "find: cannot open ..." How can I suppress these messages so only what was found is output. I was thinking on find / -name 'searchterm' | grep -v find but this doesnt work ... (5 Replies)

NAME

       zgrep - search possibly compressed files for a regular expression

SYNOPSIS

       zgrep [ grep_options ] [ -e ] pattern filename...

DESCRIPTION

       Zgrep  is used to invoke the grep on compress'ed or gzip'ed files. All options specified are passed directly to grep.  If no file is speci-
       fied, then the standard input is decompressed if necessary and fed to grep.  Otherwise the given files are uncompressed	if  necessary  and
       fed to grep.

       If  zgrep  is invoked as zegrep or zfgrep then egrep or fgrep is used instead of grep.  If the GREP environment variable is set, zgrep uses
       it as the grep program to be invoked. For example:

	   for sh:  GREP=fgrep	zgrep string files
	   for csh: (setenv GREP fgrep; zgrep string files)
