The
vim or
vi utility will display each <tab> found in the input as the number of <space>s needed to reach a tab stop. It doesn't matter whether the <tab>s are put in place before or after you use
:set to set the tab stops.

I have a file which containd a string "old" and I need to replace all old with "new" if and only if it is a string not part of a string like Gold or fold etc.
I tried with sed like below
echo "old gold old" | sed 's/old/new/g'

I downloaded vim.7.2 and compiled the vim source .
Added the vim binary path to PATH (Because iam not the root of the box)
when i load the file using vim it throws me an error

unexpand - convert spaces to tabs
SYNOPSIS
unexpand [OPTION]... [FILE]...
DESCRIPTION
Convert blanks in each FILE to tabs, writing to standard output.
With no FILE, or when FILE is -, read standard input.
Mandatory arguments to long options are mandatory for short options too.
-a, --all
convert all blanks, instead of just initial blanks
--first-only
convert only leading sequences of blanks (overrides -a)
-t, --tabs=N
have tabs N characters apart instead of 8 (enables -a)
-t, --tabs=LIST
use comma separated list of tab positions The last specified position can be prefixed with '/' to specify a tab size to use after
the last explicitly specified tab stop. Also a prefix of '+' can be used to align remaining tab stops relative to the last speci-
