LPD PRINTER CONFIGURATION
Dear All,
I have configured a printer on a unix box to be printing on windows xp printer. Below are the steps followed:-
- Create the printer on the Windows XP box and share it as prt5
- Enable unix printer services on windows XP box
- On unix box i make changes on hosts, hosts.equiv and .rhosts files contents of hosts file and hosts.equiv the same.
- .RHOSTS FILE
- root root
info root
infomain root
backup root
- HOSTS FILE
- 127.0.0.1 localhost
192.9.9.1 info
192.9.9.29 sslstocks
192.9.9.49 ssljc
192.9.9.251 backup
- HOSTS.EQUIV
- root root
info root
backup root
- During printer installation i use HP Network Printer Manager
- option no. 6 - add printer to spooler
- enter spooler destination - prt5
- enter network peripheral name - ssljc
- the rest i take default settings and the printer prt5 is added to the spooler; and if you check on printer manager you will find it there.
- Below are the contents of printcap file.
- prt6:\
:lp=:rm=ssljc:rp=prt5:sd=/usr/spool/lpd/prt5:
- If i send a print job, it gets stuck on the queue for ever. on checking the connection on the printer manager, it changes to is different from the connection port /dev/null. What could be the problem. On the existing unix box the same configuration works fine.
- Am using Sco OpenServer 3.2v5.0.5
Best Regards,
Njoroge Joseph

Through printconf-gui I configure it as a local printer, I gave it an arbitrary queue name of epson-fx-880, device is /dev/lp0, & it's a text-only printer.

I am working on Servers running SCO OpenServer 5 and I tend to setup a lot of Servers. I am wondering if mkdev -lp to create printers has a file that I can just copy and paste from an exisiting Server to a new (upgrade) server. I can do this with the hosts and resolv.conf files.
