To read and separate number and words in file and store to two new file using shell

script for separating numbers and words in a file.
Hello,
Please correct me if i am wrong,
#! /bin/bash
FILE1="$1"
FILE2="$2"
FILE3="$3"
sed 's/[0-9]//g' $FILE1 > $FILE2
sed 's/[a-zA-Z]//g' $FILE1 > $FILE3
This is the script where filenames are fetched from command prompt.

I have one line files with 17 records separated by a semi-colon. I need to create a variable from each record, which I can do via a separate awk for each one, but I know there has to be a better way.
