No, what happens is the program called "sleep" calls the function "sleep()" which causes the process which is running "sleep" to "sleep". The shell which invoked the "sleep" program will sit and wait using "wait()".

So the sleep program will do the sleeping.

The shell you are typing at will do a wait.

The rest of the processes in the machine will continue regardless.
