From what I read in OSX FAQ you should be able to boot into single user mode. It may then be possible to move the directory back to where it belongs from the command line.

I'll keep looking to see if anyone else has done this.

Well, it looks close to it...seems from this link and the other you could find where /etc went to and move it back....
/etc/master.passwd
