Everything that is sent across the wire with telnet is in plain text. Including any passwords that you might have used to connect to the remove system.

I would suggest that you dump telnet in favor of Secure Shell (www.openssh.org). If you are connecting from a Win32 machine, putty is an excellent SSH client (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/).
