If you added the userid into /etc/passwd but are using a 'shadow' file for passwords then you need to access the system via the root account (or another account and su to root) and add the userid into the shadow file. Then you should be able to use the account.

If you did this to the root account, then you will have to boot from cdrom into single user (search this web site for how to do this for your OS - I think I've seen every kind posted already).
