Windows XP problem, posting for a friend

I tried to help him, but I couln't so I am posting here:

well i have a couple of problems i would like to have answered
were to begin....well i have a windows xp pro ,and it wont let me install any software because it tells me that THE WINDOWS INSTALLER COULD NOW BE ACCESSES THIS MAY BE BECAUSE YOU ARE RUNNING IN SAFE MODE OR THE FILE IS DAMAGED OR MISSING ,now im not running in safe mode and i cant do a clean install because of the conttroller card i have i put the driver in for the controller card (during the install when windows asks for it) and the system just hangs indefinatly ,,so i cant install software and i cant do a clean install,im totally stuck. the controller card is an siig ata 133 ,have tried to up date the driver but i have the latest ,the are no question marks in the device manager.i am not a novice user ,but this has me complety stumped thanks!

Try re- installing windows xp. When it's up and running, before installing any programmes, go to "start" "programmes" and "software compatability" follow the instructions untill XP ask you for the programme CD-Disk you want to install. Insert the disk and load the programme. When the programme is loaded, chose the 2000pro compartable option and let xp do the rest.
This action usally works if the programme you want to install is 32bit or less. We must remember xp is a 64bit based operating system.

XP is still a 32-bit OS. I don't believe that Windows has officially released a 64-bit OS to the general public yet. There have been sightings of it in the wild (like the company that I work for, but I didn't get to see it with my own eyes).

64bit Windows

Windows XP Pro is not 64 bit it is 32 bit, but...

Windows XP 64bit for Workstations is 64 bit (hence the name, lol)

But as far as I know it is still in evaluation form only. Hope that helps.
