this is going to sound really stupid, but i am new to unix and only have a tiny bit of experience with it such as typing in commands. that's about it. where can i get a copy of the unix software? isn't free to download somewhere?

Yes it is free. and it's every were nowadays. This site offers "Redhat Linux with CD & Full documentation". see http://www.unix.com

if you are interested and experienced in large downloads there are lots of ftp sites that offers free linux downloads.

http://slackware.com

Since you are new to linux/unix Linux-mandrake would be nice one as a staring point. (it's redhat kde top on it)

you can also give a try to BSD UNIX http://www.freebsd.org

Perhaps we should upgrade the http://www.unix.com homepage to add links to the major download sites for each code base?

Or, create a FAQ section.......
