I new to shell script .
I want to know how to validate a String as valid date

example:

Code:

20150712 ---> valid date
20160524-->valid
201605T12-->invalid date
12341234--->invalid date

we need to valid string( yyyymmdd) to date in SunOS 5.10

please give some idea to validate

What OS, shell, and date command version are you using? What tools (e.g. awk, sed) would you accept?

I have gone through below links but those not useful for me.
I am new to unix environment .
I have tried with below command but getting error

Code:

date -d "20150712" +"%Y%m%d"
date: illegal option -- d
usage:  date [-u] mmddHHMM[[cc]yy][.SS]
        date [-u] [+format]
        date -a [-]sss[.fff]

I have a requirement
we are getting date as strings(yyyymmdd)
example:

Code:

20150712--(valid date)
20160526 --(valid date)
12340512--(invalid)
20150715TTT --(invalid)
201507--(invalid)
20150712_123--(invalid)

can you suggest which how to validate these strings.
I am working with Informatica power center. there we have is_date() function to validate dates.

Code:

is_date(i/p,'yyyymmdd')

it will give 0 or 1 , depends on what we are giving as input .

I need same functionality in UNIX as well .
