vBulletin announced an
upcoming vB iPhone mobile app. This is good news because the current app we support for mobile users,
Tapatalk, has a number of problems, that include:
- Tapatalk does not support bbcodes, especially code tags, which are very important for our tech oriented forums.
- Tapatalk spoofs the HTTP_USER_AGENT so you cannot easily track users and create PHP options based on UA.
- Tapatalk does not provide many client-side options (i.e. example above, UA is fixed and cannot be set by client).
- Tapatalk has almost no moderation functionality (cannot delete posts/threads, give infractions, move threads, etc).
- Tapatalk does not support forum owner ad code (no ads). They keep staying they "plan" this, however.
- Tapatalk does not support attachments and images on the forum site (forces you to use their image server). They used to support this; but they then switched to use their own image server. Most forum owners do not like this and have "revolted" about have their images hosted with Tapatalk.
- Tapatalk does not provide integrated support for Google Analytics.
- Tapatalk requires PHP code hacking to log user actions (to check for hacking, abuse, etc).
There are other problems with Tapatalk, and we hope the proposed vBulletin mobile app will be more forum owner friendly. We recommend the following priorities for the vB mobile app:
- Android
- iPhone
- RIM (Blackberry)
Nokia's Symbian OS is in decline (my opinion as someone who used to use Nokia exclusively, and is now a passionate Android user) since they missed the mark in the smartphone market. Personally, I also think Microsoft missed the mark in the smartphone market, but let's wait and see if they can catch up.
