I'm building Atom based very small computer with priority to low power consumption and 24/7 up time.
It will have 512M-1G RAM and 1TB disk.
I'll use it as NAS and torrent client so it will also download some content and share it.

I'll share my drive with SAMBA for Windows clients and NFS for Linux.

I have following questions:
1. Which version of light weight Linux will be best for me? I prefer good package manager so I'll not have to compile manually.
2. Which torrent client is recommended?
3. Which light desktop environment will be the best for me? Is it LXDE?

The most recommended light weight distro is Puppy Linux. I comes with OpenBox desktop that personally I like.

The only "but" is that PET package is not like "atp-get", but I don't think you will have problems finding what you need.

Regarding the Torrent client, Transmission is simple, light and very effective. If you like to automate downloads and are good in the console, try rTorrent, a console based client very light.

I built small computer based on dual core Atom 330, it is HT CPU so I see 4 cores. It has 1G RAM and 1TB green series hard drive.

I thought more about which distribution of Linux is more practical and finally my choice is lubuntu - it is light enough with LXDE desktop and has very good selection of easy to install packages.

On load RAM usage about up to 300MB. Response time is pretty good so I can recommend lubuntu for users who need light weight Linux. This distro almost doesn’t sacrifice functionality and appearance.
