Network Unable to Telnet

Dear All,

I have Compaq Alpha server running UNIX OS. with Old Hardware specification.

I had FTP conncetion using IP Switch ( FTP client ) to the Unix server in order to copy some files to my workstation. one day after closing the connection we noted that IT operations are not able to telnet to this server in order to do some administrative tasks

the Server administrator had a console session with the server in order to troubleshoot this isse, sample of the output is hereunder..

I need to know the root cause of this error message , and is it directly related to the FTP connection?. i have gone through many forums and i note that this error message is due to the number of pty lines. in addtion FTP (21) has nothing to do with ( telnet 23) !

your responses are highly appreciated.

Could be You have a hog opening connections and not closing them properly (and so each connection consumes a new port...)

What about the error message ( out of pty) highlighted in red, i think it means number of virtual telenet lines are already taken, however FTP never uses telenet port. moreover you can see in the log that the server is listning to port 23 and zero connection is established on this port !!

you think the log is incomplete ?or there could be other telnet sessions established but not showing in the log ?

any views ?

There are no telnet sessions in your "netstat -a" .

Is "inetd" still running ?
Is "telnetd" still in "inetd.conf".
Are there any "telnetd" processes in memory?

After I telnet somewhere I can do this:

$ tty
/dev/pts/4
$

/dev/pts/4 is a pty (pseudo-terminal) and telnetd must allocate one for a connection and the script program uses them too. You are out mostly due to 192.168.57.42 not properly closing connections. CLOSE_WAIT means a process on your end has closed a socket and now you waiting for a close from the other end. The other end is probably a PC that just reboots or powers off rather than closing a connection. You can probably tune your kernel to time-out the CLOSE_WAIT's but I don't know the specific for your kernel.

First of all , i am not a Unix expert. the logs posted here was sent to me from the Unix admin.

all i wana know is there any direct proof ( assurance ) that the Passive FTP connection coming from the x.x.57.42 is the reason for not accepting the Telent session.s or there might be other scenarios such as:

there wasother telenet sessions already established, however the netstat log was manuiplated before sending it, hence it is not showing here.

or -

There was any configuration change on unix kernal ( e.g chaning the number of acceptable telenet sessions temporerally, hence no tty lines will be available ) that is why the message shows that no lines available

if you can help me out in this i would really appreciate. i am investigating this issue very seriouslly , and i wana have clear evidence for this .

Please clarify whether there was a kernel change or not?
