nohup command..
Hi..

Can anybody tell me, what exactly the nohup command does & when is it used?

Your help is appreciated.

When you disconnect from a terminal - like turn off the modem, click the 'x', or otherwise tell the terminal you are using to close - this sends a signal to every process that is part of that terminals' "family" of processes. The signal is SIGHUP. Short for hangup.

When a process gets a SIGHUP signal it exits. nohup blocks the signal and the process created by nohup keeps on running - so "no hup" signal gets thru. ...sorry but that is where it comes from.

If you will start a job in a terminal like this :

$ nohup jobname &

After this if you will close the terminal, the job will continue the execution.

But if you are not using nohup and close the terminal, the job also will stop.

Ever have a command that produces output, but, for whaever reason, the output can't be redirected?

Use nohup and the output WILL be redirected to nohup.out allowing you to look at the output after the command finishes.

Issue with nohup command

Hi everyone, I am starting a nohup from a script (via scheduling system) as follows: ssh user@server "nohup command & ; exit 0" This command is not returning the command prompt untless I press "ENTER".
