How to know when a new file is created?

Hi All,

How to we get to know when say a new log file is created on an Unix box.
I need to trigger a process(say a script) when the new log file is created.

But i need to know by some means or generate a trigger when a new file is created????

Something like when we receive a new mail we get an alert ..can we know when a new log is generated in the system

Any Ideas..

One way -
setup a cron job to run every 5 minutes. In the cron script use touch to set a filetime on a dummyfile that is five minutes old. Use find with -newer dummyfile to get the name of files created in your log directory in the last 5 minutes. If you find one send an email using mailx.

All of this stuff has been answered separately many times - a forum search will get you what you need.
