Text formatting to 132 columns

I want to take a file that is generated in 132 columns from a unix based report generator and transfer it to a windows environment and preserve the column length. Any ideas how I can do this so that whatever windows based text editor that reads the document will know it should be in 132 columns?

Thanks.

What sort of column delimiter does the file have...?

I'm guessing that each row of the unix file is fairly lengthy....but I wouldn't see why the format will change.... what method of transfer are you using?

I think that "columns" here, he means characters. IE, each line is 132 characters long.

Unix knows where one line end and the next begins because each line is followed by a newline character. The unix newline character and the ASCII linefeed (sometimes abbreviated LF) are the same thing. Windows will need each line to be terminated by a linefeed and a carriage return (LF/CR).

If you use ftp, you need to use ascii mode to tranfer the file. That will cause ftp to perform this translation.

Also, HP-UX has a pair of programs, dos2ux and ux2dos for this purpose. SunOS has dos2unix and unix2dos.

I am running SCO unix and I am generating a text file from a database application that creates rows that are 132 characters long. I then want to e-mail that file to a windows exchange user.

I will see if SCO has some sort of unix2dos type function. Thanks.

It may be that you can just email it. Have you tried this? I would expect it would work. Email software should handle everything.

Unfortunately simply e-mailing it does not solve the problem. I e-mail it as an attachment to a Microsoft Exchange account and it doesn't preserve the 132 character line.

I have prepared a file that is 132 characters per line. It has dozens of adjacent spaces. I have been unable to reproduce your problem. Even using mailx and mailing the file as the body worked. We are using Exchange as our mail server and I am using Outlook as my mail program.

Try to mail to file to yourself on your unix account. Maybe your unix mail program is garbling the file.
