tar utility

Would like to know what this tar message means and where I might be able to find more about such error messages.

tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

No other errors were reported.

I guess you are doing some sort of backup jobs. Can u tell us what is the command you issue, some commands that you issue during a backup for instance /* will get the same error as you mentioned
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

Post the command that you issued.

Code:
mt -f /dev/st0 stat >/dev/null 2>&1
cd /save
tar -X /save/exclude.tar -cvf /dev/nst0 / >./log.`date '+%d'` 2>&1
mt -f /dev/st0 stat >>./log.`date '+%d'` 2>&1
mt -f /dev/st0 offline
tail ./log.`date '+%d'`|mail -s "TVL WWW Brisbane backup results" ops@domain.com.au
sleep 20

Can you try removing the verbose flag (the v) from the command? You may be able to see the offending file - for example one that is not readable by you, or otherwise not accessible.
I've gotten this error in backing up my home dir, I had an old file owned by root that was unreadable to me buried in my documentation directory that was causing the error. In that case, everything but the file was successfully backed up into the tarball.

The script is run under user root so I'm still not sure if your answer will suit in this case. But I'll bounce it off the sys admin when I get into work.

Well, if you're on a system, for example, that uses a /proc filesystem, and you try to back that up, you'll get lots of errors.
Maybe there's another reason than the one I suggested, but in my experience, I have had that happen.

Thanks again LivinFree for the feedback.

Unfortunately the Sys Admin is sick today, however I forgot to show the exclude.tar file:
Code:
gateway:/save# cat exclude.tar
/proc/*
/tmp/*
/u/*
/save/log.*
/var/spool/mail/online
/usr/local/apache/logs/*

Your point is relevant & is worth remembering.
