UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hi All,

I've one problem with printf.

Iam printing some field values from one file "file.txt" using printf, which is resulting anonymously.

awk '{
printf (" %-6s\n", substr($0,18,23))
}' file.txt

But the same printf is workin fine as per my expectation, if I try as below:

printf "%6s\n" MYSORE

Result: MYSORE

It would be a great help, if any one correct the code above printf (using substr()) command.

sorry for silly question.

It was my mistake by understanding the substr() function.
Now I corrected my code.

awk '{
printf (" %-6s\n", substr($0,18,6))
}' file.txt
