Maximum file name length

Hi folks,

Can anybody tell me whether there is any limit on the file name length and directory name length in UNIX.

Believe it to be 132 characters which is limited by how much the buffer can except versus how long a filename can be.

Found a correct answer:
Within a ufs filesystem the maximum length of a filename is 255
characters.

Within a system V filesystem the maximum length of a filename is 14
characters

Thanks thehoghunter,

One more query about this, how to find out which file system you are using. Is there any command in UNIX to find it out.

df -n on a Solaris or HPUX system will work.
