Data Let statement in ksh HELP
I have:

datafile contains 1234567890

>wc -c datafile | awk '{print $1}'
>11

The program

#!/bin/ksh
let n = (wc -c datafile | awk '{print $1}')
echo $n

I expect n to be 11 but it gives error message. What is wrong with this statement?

Change that line to:

n=$(wc -c datafile | awk '{print $1}')

# 3

you dont need another process here actually,

Code:
n=$(wc -c < filename)

# 4

hi

if the datafile has different columns this is helpful

let=$(wc -c datafile | awk '{ print $1 }')

if its having only single column value u can give as another suggested above
let =$(wc -c datafile)
