hard/soft link question

I am curious about one thing.

Lets say I have a file file-a to which new generations are created on demand by simply archiving it (ex: file-a.tar.gz) and having the new one created with the same original filename file-a.

Now what I want to know is if I create a hard/soft link to file-a, what happens to the link when a new generation gets in ?

Will the link be pointing to the new file-a or the file-a.tar.gz ?

Is it the same case for soft and hard link if not what is the differences in this case ?

If you have the file file-a and a hard link to this file (let's name it file-a-link), create an archive file-a.tar.gz, remove (unlink) file-a and create a new one with the same name (file-a), then you will have 3 files: file-a, file-a.tar.gz and file-a-link which is the old (original) file-a.
The behavour is not the same with soft links
