What OS Unix should I get?

Hello, this is my first post/newbie question. I have been running MS Windows for years. I feel it is time to broaden my horizon! I'm looking to start learning about networking & programming.

But I don't even know what Unix OS I should be looking at. I have been to Red Hat & BSD websites. I have not had much luck determening what OS to get.

Any recommendations on what Unix OS to get?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you are really new to UNIX Systems you should probably beginn with some "easy" Linux Distributions like SuSE Linux 10.0

If you want to get in with a Debian System, Ubuntu 5.10 should be best for you.

Thank You for the reply! If you don't mind me asking...what is the Debian System? See I am really a newb!

I'm thinking about getting a second cp so I don't have to worry about trying to run a dual boot system. I thinking just some bare bone system to get started learning. So, that brings me to another question. Does anybody know of a affortable ($100 range) KVM box that works well?

I'm thinking a $500 cp that is set up to run Unix & a KVM box, I should be good to go with minimal problems. Somthing like this http://ztechshop.net/computers/amd64/ .

I'm completely open to suggestions! And thank you for the help.

Hi Nick.

So lets see....

Debian is the _real_ non-commercial Linux.
It contains solely free Software which stands in contrast to Distributions like SuSE (hint: Novell...)

Of each Debian Distribution there are always three Versions available.

The Stable Release:

This is the Version you should use as beginner Smilie
(I do so too...)

The Testing Release:

This is the one which will be the next Stable Release but has still to be tested.

and last but not least the Unstable version:

This is a version that still has got to be developed Smilie

The last one is something for Hackers...

/* I tried to get it on my laptop but it just wont work Smilie */

The Main Argument why I use Debian is that its really FREE ("Free as in Free Speech, not as in Free Beer")

Sounds like your leaning to the Ubuntu 5.10?

I'm sure you know that there is a 6.06 version out now. What do you think about this version?

I'm watching a pc on ebay. It isn't worth much, but it would get me started and I can leave this pc the way it is. I figure that way I can still use MS while I learn Unix OS.

Thanks For the input!

Sure i heard of the new version.
(I think even my father uses it)

I cant give any statement to it as I don't even use the "Breezy Badger"-Version 5.10 anymore.

If you really just want a slow "come-in" to UNIX I really suggest you to use SuSE 10.0.
It is very easy to use particularly with other systems on one PC.

So you are able to keep your Windows and come to UNIX.

(I tell you, you wont keep Windows too long on your HDD if you are in once Smilie )

Nice Greets

Alrighty then....thank you for all your advise.

I guess I will start off with the SuSe 10.0 and give it a whirl.

I'm really hoping I like it as much as you think I will. I'm kinda getting tired of MS.

Thanks Again! Smilie
